Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful destination located 20 km east of Mananthavady on the Kodagu Road. The jeep ride here offers brilliant opportunities to view various animal and bird species in their natural habitat. One gets to see herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears and many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies and birds including vultures. Visitors are restricted to the outer tourist zone. It gives one an excellent perspective on how we must strive to conserve these natural wonders.

Muthanga Forest Range

The moist deciduous forest of Muthanga is blessed with varieties of trees and other plants. You can sight here maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal etc. Go and get excited with the sight of wild animal like elephant, tiger, panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs etc. The sanctuary is also blessed with its endless population of birds like peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls etc.

Pookode Lake

The beautiful freshwater lake in Wayanad, Pookode Lake lays 15 kilometre away from Kalpetta. Nestled between evergreen forest and Western Ghats, the lake is spread over 13 acre and is 40 m deep. This is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Wayanad. While reaching at this gorgeous lake, you will be experiencing a calm and peaceful environment around. The lake is surrounded by forest and you will see green and green all around, making this place an ideal location for photographers and nature lovers. One of the main tributary of Kabini River, the Panamaram rivulet originates from here.

Tea plantation 

Wayanad has a good deal of tea plantations. Many times your drive through this district would be through the rolling hills packed with tea estates. Vythiti and Meppadi are areas if you are keen to see some of the tea plantations in Wayanad. The best time to visit a tea plantation is those post monsoon seasons. Harvesting typically is an early morning affair, much before the sunrise. The tender leaves are manually plucked.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary has four ranges, of which Muthanga is one. Mainly a rainforest, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most bio-rich areas in peninsular India. This eco-tourism centre is home to both moist and dry deciduous trees and semi evergreen forests.

Part of the Nilgiri Bioreserve, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary shares a significant portion of the Western Ghats and its densely forested Malabar Hills. Known for its elephant population, this range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary offers sightings of a number of other wild animals too.

Soochipara Falls

This enchanting waterfall is 200 meters high that also offer a cliff face, ideal for rock climbing. Also, since the water falling from the waterfall forms a large pool, one can enjoy swimming and bathing in it. The water falling from Soochipara later joins Chulika River aka Chaliyar River after hills from Kerela and Tamil Nadu.

Meenmutty Waterfalls

Imagine water crashing onto the ground from over 1,000 ft. in three separate levels while an entire rainforest plays its role as the patient, supporting audience. This and much more await you at Meenmutty Falls, one among Wayanad’s delightful treasures. It can be only accessed after an arduous 2 km jungle trek, the visuals on display at the summit are worth the effort. One has separate viewing points for each of the three decks of the waterfalls and due to its location this is one of the few natural wonders in the world that can be experienced in near seclusion. You feel at ease, while the lush greenery gently washes away all that ails your soul, as the roaring water gently soothes your senses. A masterpiece, the waterfalls lie on the Ooty route in Wayanad.

Kuruva Island

Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of islands over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island is densely populated with rich flora and fauna. The geographical peculiarity of this island makes this place evergreen with a serene ambience.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Situated about 15 km from Kalpetta, the dam holds a large expanse of water and its picturesque beauty is enhanced by the chain of mountains seen on the backdrop.  It is constructed in the Banasura Lake and the nearby mountains are known as Banasura Hills. Legends say that the Asura king of Banasura, (the son of King Mahabali, who is believed to visit Kerala during every Onam festival) undertook a severe penance on the top of these hills and thus it was named after him.  The scenic mountains beckon adventure tourists and the dam site is an ideal starting point for trekking. During monsoon, visitors may also be able to see small islands in the dam’s reservoir. They are formed while the flooded reservoir submerges the surrounding areas too.  The vast expanse of the crystal clear water of the dam dotted with small islands is a photographer’s delight.

Karapuzha Dam

The landscaped gardens make for an enjoyable picnic spot with family or friends, and a small children's park is built to cater to kids’ needs. While there is no entry fee to access this mighty dam, it is advisable to visit between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This all-weather destination is best enjoyed with loved ones and a picnic basket.

Kolagappara

Chembra Peak

​Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district and lives up to its billing of being a picturesque location. It has managed to maintain its pristine nature over the years. Situated 2,100 m above sea level, this peak offers a breath-taking view of rare flora and fauna. One can come across many exotic species in these parts. The route to the peak itself has a brilliant view along with a heart-shaped lake, waterfalls and lush greenery the whole way. It is a prime spot for trekking but prior permission needs to be taken before going on these treks. Guided tours are available and can help in enhancing the entire experience.

Zipline

The zip line we talk about is the longest zipline in Kerala and South India’s second-longest. This beautifully maintained zipline is managed by highly trained adventure groups and is one of the best places for ziplining in Wayanad. This line is around three-hundred meters long and spans over some thickest forest covers of Wayanad. Located in Pozhtana in Wayanad, the zipline is on the must-do thing in Wayanad for every traveler.

Pookode Children's Park

Lakkidi View Point

Lakkidi Viewpoint is a high altitude offering a bird's eye view of the city. Located 32 kilometres from Wayanad, at an elevation of 700 mts, the region mostly stays misty and offers a beautiful view of the hairpin turns down the hill. The thrill of driving up to the point is an experience in itself. One should visit Lakkidi View Point for sunrise and sunset to get the best views. The viewpoint is also a popular picnic spot which is often referred to as the 'Gateway to Wayanad'.

Karlad Lake

A quiet retreat, Karlad Lake is a natural freshwater lake located around 8 kms from Vythiri and 3 kms away from Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad. The Wayanad Adventure Camp here offers a wide range of activities for the adventure enthusiasts out there. The activities organized involve Kayaking, Zipline, Rock climbing, Boating, Nature walk and Bamboo rafting.

Bamboo is found abundantly in Wayanad and Uravu encourages the traditional technology and craftsmanship of the tribes in creating a whole range of products using bamboo. They include both functional and decorative products. The institute also helps in marketing these products through their sales outlets at Thrikkaipetta and near the Pookot Lake.

Phantom Rock

Kolagappara  is one of the best trekking spots in Wayanad. There is a 2km steep walk to reach the hill top from where you can see the awesome view of Wayanad including Krishnagiri Cricket Stadium. This is one of the less explored places in Wayanad.

Edakkal Caves

A trip to Edakkal Caves is like a journey into our forgotten past. Located 10 kms from Sulthan Bathery, they have provided historians with great information regarding the lives and habits of our ancestors. The caves are two natural rock formations believed to have been formed by a large split in a huge rock. The carvings inside are extremely beautiful. A trek up the majestic Ambukuthi Hills is required to reach these caves. The aroma of coffee stays with you the entire way. It is truly a surreal experience as we step into the palms of history.

Bamboo Forests Wayanad

Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary

​Wayanad is one stop address for every trekker. One such spot in Wayanad that has captured the mindset of every tracker, ornithologists and nature lovers is the Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary. Here virgin forests, streams and steep hills together offer challenging avenues for trekking. 3 hours trekking is probably the best way to traverse through the rustic landscapes of the bird sanctuary. Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is best known for the presence of `Edible Nest Swift light.' It is believed that the nest is made of solidified saliva and is used to make bird's nest soup.

Wayanad Heritage Museum

There are many places in Wayanad which have great archaeological and anthropological relevance. Edakkal Caves is one of them and during the1980s there were large scale research and preservation attempts of these caves. The anthropologists who were engaged in this task collected innumerable artefacts from the district, mainly from places like Ambalavayal, Sultan Bathery and the forests of Wayanad.

Pazhassi Park Mananthavady

The Pazhassi Tomb is where thousands regularly pay homage to the famous Lion of Kerala, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. The tomb was constructed in the place where his body was cremated, and is situated on the banks of River Kabani in Mananthavady. In 1996 March this tomb has been converted to museum and today the museum is one of the centres in the State which attracts historians, researchers and students from far and wide.

Banasura Sagar Park

Awesome place to enjoy with your family. Must try the speed boat here if you are a large group. They take you far and fast which gives you a very nice experience through the dam and forest side. There is a lot to walk up the dam, but for 10 rupees there is a vehicle service available for those who wants to take that route. There is a exhibition including horror house for kids and plenty of fresh air and huge swigs for adults to pass time. The staff is courteous. Boating ends at 5 and there is a lunch break from 1 to 2.30 PM. Very pleasant and mild cold climate all the time.
